  Serial validation redirection

Nikon in Capture NX 1.1 and 1.2 is checking serial key each time you start the application, if they will detect that your key is bad, application can be disabled while you are on the internet.
Application is always trying to connect and send some encrypted data without your knowledge to sams.nikonimaging.com. It is really hard to say what type of data app is sending, because it is all encrypted.

Here it is explained how you can redirect that connection to unknown host, which doesn’t exist on the internet, eventually NIKON will not received intended message and will not be able to disable your application.

Before installation of NX 1.1 or 1.2, go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc find file “host”. File we are interested in doesn’t have any extensions, you might find file host.sam in that directory, but this is not the file we interested in.

Open the file “host” with notepad (right click on the file and select open with, then choose notepad) and at the end of the file add following line:

10.10.10.10 sams.nikonimaging.com

Save the file, install Nikon NX.

Each time you start the application you will see that it tries to validate your serial #, but it will be doing it with host 10.10.10.10 and not real NIKON server (10.10.10.10 most likely doesn’t exist in your home network) If Capture NX can not connect to licence server it will by default let you run the application.

You will still need serial number to run the app for longer than 30 days, but that should be easy if you know what E-mule is. If you don’t then you need to pay for the software.

  Tools

Cool tools:

- Filemon – will let you monitor and see what files are being accessed\created\modified in the background

Nikon Capture NX and capture 4.4.0 removal

Aren’t you tired of software companies that leave huge chunks of code in your computer even after you don’t want to use their software and you did uninstall the software completely? Recently Sony almost got sued for those procedures, installing malicious files just to protect their business.

Many companies does that, one of them is Nikon, they will let you install their software, as trial version, and then when 30 days is gone they will not let you uninstall the software completely.
If I don’t want to get your software I don’t want to have any files from you, find other ways to protect your software, Nikon, if you don’t know how, shoot me an email I will get you really safe noninvasive solution.

I found that my box is crashing because of those extra files and decided to find them and remove them; I think there is noting wrong with that, I’m not generating patches\serial generators, just cleaning my good old box so it runs faster.

Delete following folders with the content:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ultima_T15
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\EnterNHelp
And one file:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PKP_DLea.DAT (this file might have different last few letters)

If you can’t see those folders and file you need to unhide system files:
Double click on My Computer
select Tools menu
Go to Folder Options
Select View tab
Select option box “ Show hidden files and folders”
Uncheck box “Hide protected operating system files”

That operation will completely remove Nikon Capture from your system,

We can also use applications like Sand BoxIE from www.sandboxie.com, application will let us install any software or surf the internet even the most infected and malicious websites, then after we decided that we want to clean our box, just purge the sandbox and all the garbage\viruses\leftovers from the applications are gone – you have fresh start.

If you didn’t have sandbox installed when you were installing Nikon Capture software and still want to completely remove Nikon software and start using Bible, Adobe plug-ins or other RAW readers then follow above procedure.

Remember that after you have used Nikon Capture for 30 days trial, you CAN NOT use it again because you will be violating Nikon policy and agreement, this walk through is only for people that want to completely remove Nikon software and do not want to install it again In the future, that will not stop you from changing mind and buying software later on.
